Being a member of a Board can be daunting. Although there are many good references to help Board members, often times a person’s initiation consists of a heart-felt ask from an organization’s chief executive or another Board member accompanied with accolades of how much you will bring to the table. From there it is a regular challenge to understand the role and expectations of board members and how the board works and makes decisions.

This workshop is designed to help new and existing board members understand the infrastructure necessary to have a high functioning board. It will focus on three specific areas:

• Who do you choose to recruit to your board?  The process begins with identifying what skills and expertise is needed, to establishing a procedure for selecting potential board members and establishing clear expectations from the very first interaction.
• What is the process of orienting a new board member?  Nonprofits can be complex and a new board member can feel overwhelmed at his or her first meeting.  Learn how to effectively “onboard” new members beginning immediately.
• How do you conduct the business of the board? Most boards meet no more than once a month. It seldom provides enough time to delve into the issues and perform due diligence. The most productive boards have an effective committee structure and use those committees to accomplish a significant amount of the work.
